Pennsylvania Hunting

Most of Pennsylvania is a series of mountains, rolling hills, plateaus, and ridges punctuated by valleys. Over 50% of the land is still covered by forestland and the only lowlands are in the southeast part of the state. Pennsylvania is home to more deep and useful rivers than any other US state. Pine Creek Gorge is often called “The Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania”. It is over 50 miles long and 1,000 feet deep in areas. Pennsylvania is first among other US states in the number of licensed hunters, State Game Lands, and covered bridges.

Pennsylvania elk are seen in Elk and Cameron counties in Pennsylvania. The PA elk population is around 500. This is a random drawing license lottery system. If you are awarded an elk license you may not reapply for 5 years unless you were awarded an anterless license. If you are not drawn, you earn preference points for next year. In 2009, 44 PA elk were bagged by hunters.

The Pennsylvania Black Bear population is over 15,000. They are intelligent and curious animals. Bears love thick cover such as swamps, bogs, mountain laurel thickets, north-facing slopes, and remote sections of river bottoms. The heaviest bear harvest is in northeast Pennsylvania (number of bear over 500 lbs.) In 2011, 4,350 Pennsylvania bears were harvested. Pennsylvania is one of the top states for bear hunting. If successful, you must tag and take your bear to a check station. You will need a bear license in addition to a regular hunting license.

Whitetail Deer number over 1 million in Pennsylvania. The largest deer are found in the northern tier counties, especially the northwestern ones. In 2011, 336,200 whitetail deer were bagged by PA hunters.

Pennsylvania offers excellent turkey hunting as turkey are seen throughout PA. The estimated PA turkey population is about 360,000. There are spring turkey and fall turkey hunts. In 2010, 31,908 turkeys were bagged during the spring hunt and 15,884 turkey during the fall turkey hunt. Pennsylvania is one of the top states for hunting turkey.

Feral swine are seen in the southwest, south central, and northeast regions of Pennsylvania. The population of PA hogs is roughly 3,000. Feral swine are protected in some counties but a hunter/trapper may bag the animal if their county is not one that protects them. You must report the taking of a feral swine within 24 hours. So please check the count you are hunting.

Small Game offered is: squirrel, grouse, rabbit, pheasant, quail, crows, snowshoe hare, and woodchucks. Furtaking/Trapping can be done for fox, raccoons, opossums, skunks, weasels, coyotes, bobcats (need special permit), mink, muskrat, beaver, and fisher. Please check regulations and bag limits on each specie. A “Fur taker’s License” is needed to hunt all furbearing animals except coyotes.

Migratory Birds (webbed) are ducks, mergansers, coots, Atlantic Brant, Canadian Geese, and Snow Geese. Webless are doves, woodcock, common snipe, rails, moorhens, and gallinules. In addition to a regular hunting license, you will need a Federal Duck Stamp, and a HIP (harvest Information program) survey paper. Non-toxic shot must be used. All first time hunters/trappers must take hunter education course before they can purchase a license, regardless of age. There is “NO SUNDAY” hunting in PA.
